Lockheed Martin Space Systems is a global Security, Aerospace, and Information Technology Company. The new 110,000 sf Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is a state-of-the-art laboratories building that will house 130 engineers, scientists, and staff. These laboratories will host advanced research and development in emerging technology areas, such as thermal sciences, energetics, nanotechnology, synthesis, high temperature materials, and advanced devices.
Howell Electric was selected to provide electrical construction, BIM design, fire alarm installation, toxic gas monitoring systems, and LEL detection systems for Lockheed Martin’s new state-of-the-art 110,000sf Advanced Materials Research Building in Palo Alto.
This ground up two story project features: 38 R&D chemistry labs, utility areas, chemical storage rooms, explosion proof test support building, Class A office spaces, support areas, conference rooms, break areas, and private offices.
The MEP systems consist of a new 3.75MW 12KV Substation with dual 4000Amp feeds, 250kW emergency generator, LED lighting with automatic dimming system is used throughout the building to maximize energy efficiency, three 1200Amp 480Volt services to the building, five 800Amp 120/208Volt distribution panels, 45 225Amp 208Volt panels to support the labs, 400-Ton central plant, three 60HP air handlers, four 30HP exhaust fans, 58 fume hoods, fire alarm systems, security systems, toxic gas monitoring systems, flammable gas monitoring systems, LEED’s Gold accreditation.
Howell Electric fully commissioned this facility and the new substation to Lockheed’s most stringent specifications.

These laboratories will host advanced research and development in emerging technology areas, such as thermal sciences, energetics, nanotechnology, synthesis, high temperature materials, and advanced devices.
The Electrical systems consist of a new 3.75MW 12KV Substation with dual 4000Amp distribution sections, and three 1200Amp 480Volt services to the ATC building. In addition, this sub-station has enough capacity to handle 2 planned future building of similar design.
